Kelly Slater and John John Florence talk Teahupo‘o

We always had a sneaking suspicion that Kelly Slater was John John's dad ...

After surfing in what many are calling “the best heat ever” in the “best contest ever,” 11-time world champion Kelly Slater and John John Florence (who Kelly refers to as “the best barrel rider in the world”) recall their epic matchup at Teahupo‘o during the semifinals of the 2014 Billabong Pro Tahiti.

In the video, the two world famous surfers break down each other’s epic rides and lament that Kelly couldn’t get past Billabong Pro Tahiti winner Gabriel Medina in the final.

“I think he let Gabriel win,” jokes John John.

“That’s the pinnacle in pro surfing—to have a heat against this guy [John John Florence] in big barrels,” says Kelly.

At the end of the video, when John John says to Kelly, “Bye Dad!” as Slater drives away, we come to find out what many Internet conspiracy theorists have long stated to be true. We knew it!

On a side note, props to videographer/editor Peter King for getting two of surfing’s biggest stars to open up so candidly.
